How to Make the Perfect Gin and Tonic with Lime

a perfect gin and tonic

A classic Gin and Tonic relies on the quality of its components and proper temperature management.

Using a premium spirit like Henley’s Classic Dry Gin ensures the botanical profile balances the bitterness of the quinine and the acidity of the lime.

The Ingredients:

  • 50ml Henley’s Classic Dry Gin: A traditional, juniper-led London Dry that serves as the foundation.
  • 150ml Premium Tonic Water: Choose a crisp, neutral tonic rather than a heavily flavoured option.
  • Fresh Lime: When adding a citrus garnish you should always use only the peel!
  • Large Ice Cubes: Use plenty of large, solid ice cubes to keep the drink cold without rapid dilution.

Step-by-Step Method To Making The Perfect G&T

1. Chill the Glass: 1 minute.

Fill a highball or Copa glass to the top with large ice cubes. Discard any melted water before adding ingredients.

2. Add the Spirit: 30 seconds.

Pour 50ml of Henley’s Classic Dry Gin directly over the ice.

3. Introduce the Citrus: 30 seconds.

Carefully peel the lime so you have a thick strip of peel. Then ‘wring’ this out over the glass before dropping in to release all of the oils from the peel and perfume the drink.

4. Pour the Tonic: 30 seconds.

Tilt the glass slightly and pour 150ml of chilled tonic water down the inside of the glass to preserve the carbonation.

5.Stir and Garnish: 30 seconds.

Stir gently once from the bottom to combine the flavours without releasing the bubbles. Garnish with a second fresh lime wedge on the rim.

Core Principles for the Perfect Serve

The ratio of one part gin to three parts tonic water keeps the alcohol balanced.

Keeping the tonic chilled beforehand prevents the ice from melting too quickly when poured.

High-quality ice cubes with a large surface area are critical, as small or crushed ice melts faster and alters the flavour profile within minutes.
