What is the Difference Between Gin and Vodka?

gin vs vodka

Gin and Vodka: the classic rivals of the spirit world. Both are smooth operators, but that’s where their similarities end. Though they may appear similar at first glance, their ingredients and flavour profiles set them apart.

Whether you’re a connoisseur or simply someone who enjoys a good drink, understanding these distinctions can help you to appreciate each spirit more fully.

The Basics: Ingredients and Distillation

Vodka

Vodka is often referred to as a ‘neutral spirit’, which is an apt description of its character. Traditionally, vodka is made from fermented grains like wheat, rye, or barley, but it can also be distilled from potatoes, corn and even grapes!

The primary goal in vodka production is to create a spirit that is as flavourless and odourless as possible. In order to achieve this, vodka is distilled multiple times, often filtered through charcoal, to remove any nasty impurities and any trace of flavour from its base ingredients. The result is a pure, smooth spirit with a high alcohol content, usually around 40% ABV (alcohol by volume).

Gin

Gin, on the other hand, starts life much like vodka. It’s also distilled from grains such as barley or wheat. Gin’s distinctive character however comes from the addition of botanicals – herbs, spices, flowers, and most notably, juniper berries.

Botanicals are either added during or after distillation depending on the distillery and their unique quest to define the flavour profile of the gin. Juniper berries are a legal requirement for any spirit to be labelled as gin in the UK and EU, giving gin it its signature piney, slightly bitter taste. Other common botanicals include coriander, angelica root, citrus peels and cardamom.

Flavour Profile: Neutral vs. Aromatic

Due to its production process, vodka is best known for its neutral taste. This neutrality is precisely what makes vodka so versatile in cocktails as it can blend seamlessly with a wide range of ingredients without overpowering them. Often people love vodka for its smooth and subtle character whether served neat, on the rocks or in a delicious cocktail recipe!

Gin in contrast, is often celebrated for its complex and aromatic flavour profile. The presence of juniper and other botanicals creates a rich layered taste experience, making gin a more assertive spirit than vodka.

Depending on the botanicals ranging from citrusy to floral, spicy and earthy, gin is a star in cocktails like the classic G&T (gin and tonic) or Negroni where the bold flavours can shine.
